Confined spaces are enclosed areas that subject workers to hazardous circumstances. Although the properties, such as the location, size and shape, may vary significantly, they are equally dangerous and impose similar outcomes. More recently, the incidence of injuries occurring while operating in confined spaces has risen. Because of this, confined space training is now available. This training helps workers by teaching the right way for entering, exiting and operating in and around confined areas. Also, workers are taught the appropriate steps to take when an emergency or accident occurs.
–Considering how high the number of injuries and fatal accidents were before the implementation of training programs, it is a given that these training programs are working and very useful.
–Thanks to the high success rate, most indoor and outdoor professions are now making training a prerequisite for getting hired.
Coal mining training is one of the well-known fields that have implemented training into their hiring process. Both novice and advanced miners are expected to go through and pass training. The training programs and courses they will take will enhance awareness and better equip them for working efficiently while under pressure.
Ever since the inception of the MSMA (Mine Safety and Health Administration), the number of injury and accident reports have gone down dramatically. As for the reports that are made, the guidelines and steps taught by MERD (Mine Emergency Response Development) have prepared miners to carry out mine rescues. Consequently, miners are experiencing lesser problems and safer and healthier conditions.
For most training programs, mining companies are able to monitor the progress of their miners. Some of the associations, such as the JAHSA (Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association), continue to work with mining companies to promote and facilitate mine safety. Moreover, the JAHSA rewards individual workers and mining companies for decreasing their total of accidents.
